Spectacular  Settings

Two venues in the heart of Calgary, each with their own personality.

A beautifully appointed fishing lodge on an island on the Bow River in the middle of the city, and a gorgeously updated historical house surrounded by gardens where the two rivers meet.
All you need to add is love.

River Cafe and Deane House

River Cafe and Deane House

Inspired by natural beauty

River Café sits in the heart of Prince’s Island Park, where the Bow River passes through the city’s downtown core. Inspired by the natural setting of the Bow River Valley, the restaurant has the feel and nostalgic appearance of an old Rocky Mountain fishing lodge with its open-hearth fieldstone fireplace and panoramic views of the park and Calgary's dramatic cityscape beyond.

Celebrate your special day surrounded by friends and family in the romantic and rustic elegance of River Café. In Winter, Spring Summer and Fall, experience the natural beauty of Prince’s Island Park. The many vistas of Prince's Island offer a breathtaking backdrop to your perfect day and magnificent photo opportunities abound both inside and out.

Culinary Philosophy

 Seasonal Canadian Cuisine

The culinary philosophy of Deane House and River Café, is deeply rooted in sustainability. Decision-making around all aspects of operations is governed by a commitment to championing local food economies. We connect directly with growers and producers at their farms, gardens and ranches, and carefully choose those purveyors who are responsible stewards of the land.

We have an on-site edible garden at both locations, and are longstanding supporters of urban gardening initiatives. We forage, pickle, cure, preserve quality seasonal ingredients borrowing from traditional holistic culinary techniques to create a style of cuisine that is a thoroughly modern celebration of regional ingredients.

Our Journey Towards Zero Waste

We believe we can make a difference. As a result, we make very deliberate choices about how we operate, and we are constantly reviewing our practices to find ways to further reduce our "foodprint." Eliminating bottled water, reducing energy consumption and water use, daylight dining, reusing materials, recycling and composting are just some of the ways we lessen our impact on the environment. Careful sorting routines at the restaurants means that nearly everything we use is diverted from landfill waste.

The Chefs

River Café
Chef Matthias Fong brings a passion for Alberta's regional ingredients to the culinary style of River Café. He first learned to cook from his Chinese mother and grandmother, then went on to work closely with his mentors, River Café’s former chefs Scott Pohorelic and Andrew Winfield, as well as British Michelin-starred chef Marcus Wareing.

Today he brings detail and ingenuity to River Café’s kitchen using traditional culinary techniques through a contemporary lens. He is also one of a select few Canadian Chefs chosen to represent "The Flavours of Canada" in 2016 at the James Beard House in New York City.

Deane House
Chef Jamie Harling
credits his grandparents, as well as his time spent on a farm in the Southwest of France, for nurturing his passion for local, seasonal and sustainable foods.

Toronto born and raised, Jamie made his move to Calgary in June 2011.  A graduate of the George Brown College Culinary program, he earned his stripes in the industry working in Toronto, the UK & South Carolina.

Celebrating the best produce available while respecting the ingredients on hand, Jamie exemplifies his strong belief in local and seasonal cuisine through his reliance on locale purveyors, all to create a contemporary Canadian culinary journey.
